Legal Counsel - Leeds (LS)

Optimum Recruitment Group are proud to be working exclusively with this fast paced, growth client whose head office is based just outside Leeds and has numerous operational sites nationally. We are seeking to appoint a Legal Counsel to the team.

Reporting to the General Counsel, you will be supporting the organisation to manage all legal requirements of the group.  Working closely with the GC, the management team and commercial teams you will review legal documents and ensure internal governance along with company secretarial assistance, providing the Board with support and advice.

The role requires a qualified lawyer capable of getting involved in a broad range of topics to advise the business and support the commercial function in all legal matters.  The legal function has a strong identity within the company allowing for involvement in all aspects of the business for a wider experience and good potential for progression.  A background in either commercial contracts, property matters, or litigation would be helpful however, the right person and attitude and a willingness to learn is the only prerequisite.

The key responsibilities in the role will include:

  • Focussing specifically on the key legal areas of:
    • commercial contracts in order to advise the commercial team on all contracting positions of the company.
    • property matters for a business that runs from a number of sites all over the UK.
    • any contentious matters arising within the business.
    • employment matters alongside our experienced HR team.
  • Assisting with company secretarial matters in providing support to the General Counsel and Board:
    • Board papers and pack management.
    • Administration of running the Board.
  • Assisting the General Counsel in providing advice to the Company:
    • Legal knowledge and governance check for the group.
  • Updating relevant parties on any legal changes and developments:
    • Policy updates.
    • Legal knowhow and training ownership.
  • Overseeing external legal providers

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is qualified with demonstrable PQE either in a private practice firm or in-house team.
  • Has the ability to effectively work with internal and external parties to achieve necessary outcomes, dealing with wide ranging stakeholders.
  • Has exceptional attention to detail and documentary skills, being a large part of the role.
  • Has desire to learn and gain experience outside of your field of expertise, as a broad range of law will need to be covered.
  • Has the ability to take ownership and act independently where required, as part of a small team.
  • Understanding and experience in one of the key legal areas outline above.
  • Experience in managing a busy caseload, working in a busy environment, managing expectations and prioritising the order of work, or the ability to do so.
  • Commercial awareness, and an understanding of risk assessment and business needs on top of an understanding of the law, or personality to cope with this.
  • Previous in house experience would be an advantage but is not essential.
